Importantly, the platform will operate without ads and without marketing tracking. Musk emphasizes that there will be no “ad hooks”, mechanisms that he believes compromise user security and promote data collection.

This approach sharply contrasts with that of WhatsApp, which has been criticized for its handling of metadata and unencrypted backups. Indeed, Meta’s application retains some information about contacts and communication frequency.

By leveraging the philosophy of Bitcoin, which is based on code transparency and the absence of intermediaries, Musk aims to go further. His goal: to offer a truly confidential messaging system that can withstand censorship and ad-based economic systems.

Dorsey versus Musk: Two Visions of the Same Revolution

Meanwhile, Jack Dorsey pursues another path to decentralization with Bitchat, a still-in-beta app accessible via TestFlight. Described as a “weekend project,” this messaging system relies on a Bluetooth Mesh network. This technology allows direct interaction between devices without the need for an internet connection or centralized server.

“My weekend project to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays, and store and forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things. Bitchat: Bluetooth mesh chat…IRC vibes.”

The end-to-end encryption and the store-and-forward model are applied in the application. Indeed, the system is particularly concrete since messages can travel from one device to another without directly connecting to the recipient’s terminal, over 300 meters away, while ensuring the anonymity of the individuals involved, as users do not even need a phone number or an email address.

Dorsey aims to create a resilient, anonymous, and completely off-network communication tool that can operate even in the event of an internet outage. This approach emphasizes the protection of personal data and freedom of exchange.

Bitchat also includes a Panic Mode: three presses on the logo immediately erase all stored data. Finally, its code is open source, and technical documentation is already available on GitHub. Thanks to this transparency, the project attracts the attention of privacy advocates and many Web3 developers.

Towards a New Era of Decentralized Communication

Whether it’s X Chat or Bitchat, these two initiatives represent a clear evolution in digital communication. They mark a return to communication tools free from intermediaries. After revolutionizing finance with Bitcoin, decentralization is now challenging the private messaging domain.

Elon Musk’s strategy primarily focuses on integration into a universal ecosystem, that of X. Jack Dorsey, on the other hand, favors offline resilience and freedom of use. Although these two perspectives are distinct, they share a common goal: to restore control of their interactions to users and reduce their dependence on large centralized entities.

If X Chat manages to ensure truly transparent encryption, it will mark a significant step forward in the protection of personal data.
